The Fourth Estate is an international, independent journalism Public Benefit Corporation.

The Fourth Estate Award is presented annually to honor excellence for original journalism in the public interest.

Application Deadline

Winner Announcement and Presentation
The winner will be announced in March and the award presented at the JournalismUnConference in Miami. Winners do not need to be present.

Eligibility
Works for consideration must have been published for the first time between January 1 and December 31, 2016.  Submissions are open to any professional digital, radio, broadcast or print journalist who works for any news organization, news outlet, news service; or individuals, including freelance journalists, with a demonstrated record of reporting and journalism in the public’s interest.

The Steve Buttry Award for College Journalism is awarded in honor of veteran journalist, educator and mentor Steve Buttry

It is awarded in recognition for the original news article or broadcast report by a college student that best exemplifies the Fourth Estate’s core journalistic values of Truth, Transparency and Community.

Eligibility
Works for consideration must have been published for the first time between January 1 and December 31, 2016.  Submissions are open to any college or university journalist. Unpublished manuscripts, work published for an internship or for a class assignment are not acceptable.

Open to any currently enrolled high school student, this is an annual contest and award for the best 500 word (+/-) essay that describes the importance of the Fourth Estate in modern society.
